TRAUMA
Life can bring unpredictable and overwhelming experiences that can leave one struggling with difficult emotions and frightening memories. Others may become numb and disconnected in a manner interferes with enjoyment and pleasure in everyday life and relationships. Traumatic experiences may involve many different types of frightening and stressful experiences. For example, these experiences may emanate from different types of life events, including accidents, natural disasters, a violent attack against you, life threatening illnesses, unexpected losses, deeply humiliating life moments, chronic stresses, oppression, emotional, physical and sexual abuse, and sexual assault.
One's sense of safety and security in the world may become compromised if the trauma was unexpected, you were unprepared, felt powerless to prevent it, were helpless, it happened repeatedly, someone was abusive toward you, and it happened in childhood. These incidents have an effect on the individual and on his or her relationships, especially if one has no support and is isolated in having to deal with difficult memories and emotions.
